The FE-40 is a 40 watt EL-34 based amp that was designed specifically for driving with pedals. That is, it's basically a clean amp, but it does have a separate GAIN and master VOLUME so you can control how hard you want to drive the front end (FE), but even at higher gain settings, you won't get too much break up.
